Habib appeared before the Board and was questioned with regard to his ride on GAVEL STRIKE in the straight.

In this regard, his attention was specifically drawn to his decision to make his run on the outside of the course rather than continue riding his horse on the inside of CAPTAIN WHO (L Ferraris) where there was sufficient galloping room to do so.

Watch the race here:

Jockey Habib explained that coming off the turn which pushes the horses out, he had initially intended to take the run on the outside of CAPTAIN WHO (L Ferraris) and on the inside of COUNT MARSH (R Fourie).

However, as GAVEL STRIKE raced up to those horses, he anticipated that the run may close and therefore elected to continue his outward motion in order to obtain a clear run on his outside rather than risk breaking the momentum of his horse directing it in.

The Board noted the explanation of Jockey C Habib which was corroborated by the patrol films of the race.

Three jockeys were sanctioned for crop offences:

Accordingly, a penalty of R1000 was imposed

Jockey Ashton Arries signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 58.10.2, read in conjunction with Guideline M, in that he misused his crop by striking the horse DIAMONDS AND TOADS more than 12 times in the entire race.
