Vets Reign at Scottsville

Two veterinarians, Dr Rob Crossley and Dr Diana Foden, were assisted by Gold Circle transport manager Ryk Niewenhius, and Sean Tarry’s assistant trainer Dijon Steyn, in coming to the rescue last Saturday when helping the two year old filly Millennium Reign recover from heat exhaustion when she collapsed on the track after the G1 Allan Robertson Championship. Dr Rob Crossley described the condition Millennium Reign suffered from as being “post-race distress syndrome” where the internal temperature of the horse rises beyond a critical point where it can no longer regulate its own body temperature via its natural means of sweating. In this case, the hot and dry temperatures on the day, combined with the stress of the race and the lack of wind to aid in cooling via sweat evaporation, were all contributing factors to the filly’s condition . . . . read more . . .
