A Melbourne Cup Solution?

World's richest 2400m handicap produces thriller

Caulfield Cup-winning jockey Pat Cosgrave now heads to the Melbourne Cup full of confidence he can help break Godolphin’s curse in the race.

This was after declaring that everything went wrong for his winning mount Best Solution during Saturday’s $5 million feature.

“I’ve got to give all credit to the horse,” Cosgrave said after his narrow but incredible victory. “I had a bad trip around the course. I had a bad draw, jumped slow and had to commit earlier than I should have.

A decade after winning his first Caulfield Cup, Godolphin trainer Saaed bin Suroor has triumphed again with the international visitor producing a gutsy performance to take out the world’s richest 2400 metre handicap on turf.

In a desperate finish to Saturday’s thriller top weight Best Solution held off a charge from Homesman to win by a half-head.

Having given the global Godolphin operation its second Caulfield Cup after All The Good’s 2008 success, Best Solution is now on a course to try to win owner Sheikh Mohammed a first Melbourne Cup.

For visiting jockey Cosgrave it was a seventh Gr1 win with four this year, including three on Best Solution.

The great feature was now shown on Tellytrack as the SA Racing Broadcaster did now have the rights for the race.
