The Cape Breeders Club hosted its ever popular Stallion Services Auction at Pearl Valley on Thursday night, and, once again, the event proved a huge success.
The auction was topped by a service to Maine Chance Farms’ outstanding sire Vercingetorix, with Owloon Stud purchasing the much sought after service for R220 000.

It was great timing for the purchaser as 48 hours later Vercingetorix’s remarkable season continued at Hollywoodbets Scottsville when his son Alesian Chief downed a top-class field of sprinters to capture the Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint.
The Corrie Lensley trained three-year-old became Vercingetorix’s sixth G1 winner, and fourth of the current season following Astrix, Chansonette and Pomp And Power.
In total, services to various stallions made a handsome R857 400 on Thursday, with Owloon Stud also purchasing a service to Varsfontein Stud’s champion sire Gimmethegreenlight for R170 000.
Other services to prove popular was one to Ridgemont Highlands’ sire sensation Rafeef (knocked down to Syrilla Stud for R60 000) and What A Winter, with that service sold to Owloon Stud for R59 000.
The stallion service auction was preceded on Thursday by the Cape Breeders Club’s golf day for 2022. Held in perfect weather, it was won by Varsfontein Stud’s Jaco Erasmus in partnership with his brother Wernar.
The Cape Breeders Club thanked this year’s umbrella supporter Bloodstock South Africa, as well as all the farms and breeders who participated in the 2022 Stallion Service Auction.
A word of appreciation was also extended to Angus Williamson, who proved a superb auctioneer and MC at Thursday night’s event.
