Jockey Calvin Habib was question by the KZN Stipes about his ride in the sixth race at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday.

Habib appeared before the Board and was questioned with regard to his ride on GAVEL STRIKE in the straight.
In this regard, his attention was specifically drawn to his decision to make his run on the outside of the course rather than continue riding his horse on the inside of CAPTAIN WHO (L Ferraris) where there was sufficient galloping room to do so.

Jockey Habib explained that coming off the turn which pushes the horses out, he had initially intended to take the run on the outside of CAPTAIN WHO (L Ferraris) and on the inside of COUNT MARSH (R Fourie).
However, as GAVEL STRIKE raced up to those horses, he anticipated that the run may close and therefore elected to continue his outward motion in order to obtain a clear run on his outside rather than risk breaking the momentum of his horse directing it in.
The Board noted the explanation of Jockey C Habib which was corroborated by the patrol films of the race.
Three jockeys were sanctioned for crop offences:
Jockey Billy Jacobson signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 58.10.2, read in conjunction with Guideline M, in that he misused his crop by striking the horse PRINCESS PHEE more than 12 times in the entire race.
In deciding what action to take against Jockey B Jacobson the Board considered the number of times (13) Jockey B Jacobson struck the horse PRINCESS PHEE, the distance over which and manner in which, Jockey B Jacobson used his crop, the fact that he won the race and his record (0) in relation to this Rule. Accordingly, a penalty of R1000 was imposed
Jockey Ashton Arries signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 58.10.2, read in conjunction with Guideline M, in that he misused his crop by striking the horse DIAMONDS AND TOADS more than 12 times in the entire race.
In deciding what action to take against Jockey A Arries the Board considered the number of times (14) Jockey A Arries struck the horse DIAMONDS AND TOADS, the distance over which and manner in which, Jockey A Arries used his crop and his record (3) in relation to this Rule. Accordingly, a penalty of R1500 was imposed.
Jockey Lyle Hewitson signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 58.10.2, read in conjunction with Guideline M, in that he misused his crop by striking the horse AALSMEER more than 12 times in the entire race.
In deciding what action to take against Jockey L Hewitson the Board considered the number of times (14) Jockey L Hewitson struck the horse AALSMEER, the distance over which and manner in which, Jockey L Hewitson used his crop and his record (0) in relation to this Rule. Accordingly, a penalty of R750 was imposed.
