Cartier Racing Awards – Field Of Gold & Sosie Lead

35th Racing Awards

Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Field Of Gold and middle-distance star Sosie are tied at the top of the initial points standings for this year’s Cartier Horse of the Year, the premier equine award of the Cartier Racing Awards.

Established in 1991 to reward excellence in horseracing, the 35th Cartier Racing Awards will be presented at the Dorchester Hotel in London on the evening of Wednesday, November 19.

Field Of Gold (64 points) produced a sensational display in the Curragh Classic on May 24 as he readily beat another Juddmonte colt, Cosmic Year, by nearly four lengths.

Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the son of 2014 Cartier Horse of the Year Kingman had previously finished strongly to go down by half a length to Ruling Court (48) in the Betfred 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

As well as sharing the lead in the Cartier Horse of the Year division, Field Of Gold heads the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt standings, with a trio of Classic-winning colts trained by Aidan O’Brien for Coolmore partnerships also taking high rank in both categories.

Lambourn (60) delivered a relentless front-running performance to take the Betfred Derby at Epsom Downs on Saturday, while Henri Matisse and Camille Pissarro have both accrued 40 points thanks to respective victories in the Emirates Poule d’Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey Club.

Last season’s Grand Prix de Paris victor Sosie is clear in the Cartier Older Horse standings, with Alain and Gerard Wertheimer’s homebred colt having returned to Longchamp to annex both the Prix Ganay and Prix d’Ispahan on his two four-year-old appearances for Andre Fabre this year.

Los Angeles (48) is unbeaten in two starts in 2025 as well, including a rallying success in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, while well-travelled filly Choisya (48) won twice in Dubai before annexing the Jenny Wiley Stakes in the United States.

Desert Flower (60) formed part of a Newmarket Classic double for Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby when making all in the Betfred 1000 Guineas, just 24 hours after the success of Ruling Court.

The Night Of Thunder homebred leads the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly category after coming home third behind the Coolmore-owned duo of Minnie Hauk (48) and Whirl (32) in the Betfred Oaks.

Zarigana (40), who was awarded the Emirates Poule d’Essai des Pouliches in the stewards’ room, and Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas scorer Lake Victoria (32) complete the early pacesetters.

A pair of five-year-old mares share the early Cartier Sprinter standings. Believing (24) captured the Al Quoz Sprint Sponsored By Azizi Developments on her first appearance since being sold to a Coolmore partnership.

The George Boughey-trained daughter of Mehmas, who is in foal to Frankel, could yet bid for more big-race glory at Royal Ascot.

Mgheera (24) has also shone for new connections this season, winning the Prix de Saint-Georges and Betfred Temple Stakes for trainer Ed Walker and owners Lord Lloyd Webber & Arthur Mitchell.

Candelari (34) stamped himself as the rising star in the long-distance ranks with a decisive victory in the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier. Homebred by the Aga Khan Studs, the Francis-Henri Graffard-trained four-year-old tops the Cartier Stayer standings ahead of Dubai Future (18) and Epic Poet (18), who were first and third in the Dubai Gold Cup Sponsored By Al Tayer Motors.
