Raise The Chalice!

Few sport better pedigrees on the CTS Lanzerac Ready To Run Sale than lot 100 - take a look

Silvano wins the Gr1 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup

While there a number of really related juveniles on sale at this week’s Cape Ready To Run Sale, there are few sporting better pedigrees than does lot 100.

Going by the name of Silver Chalice, the Maine Chance Farms consigned colt is a son of record breaking champion sire Silvano.

One of South Africa’s best stallions, Silvano’s offspring include 14 individual G1 winners.

These not only include local champions Aslan, Bold Silvano, Heavy Metal and King’s Gambit, but also Deutsches Derby winner, and potential Melbourne Cup runner, Lucky Speed.

Silvano, who stands at Maine Chance Farms, is also a hugely successful commercial stallion. In 2014, Silvano sired 51 yearlings fetched R32 225 000, with an extremely healthy average price of R630 000.

The bay Silver Chalice is out of the Royal Chalice mare Crystal Chalice, a proven Grade 1 producer. The now deceased Crystal Chalice is the dam of the gutsy and brilliant filly Sparkling Gem, whose six wins included the Gr1 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas. Now at stud, Sparkling Gem earned over R1 million on the track, and won or placed in 12 feature races.

Crystal Chalice herself is out of G1 Cape Fillies Guineas in the form of Flying Snowdrop, while Silver Chalice himself traces back directly in female to Hydroplane II – dam of US Triple Crown winner Citation.
