Erik’s Varsfontein First!

Exciting Erik The Red is producing the goods

Varsfontein’s first foal by Erik The Red was welcomed recently. The magnificent filly is out of the Silvano mare, Black Flame.

“We are very excited to reproduce this proven nick as Captain Al has done so well with this family. Black Flame is a half-sister to Gr2 Tibouchina Stakes winner Fragrant Al and Gr 3 Diana Stakes winner Captain’s Flame, both by Captain Al.

We love the shape which Erik The Red is giving to his foals, and this particular foal is a great example!” Carolyn Erasmus told the Sporting Post.

A Gr2 Cape Merchants winner, who was the first 3yo in 22 years to beat older rivals in the Cape summer season speed clash, Captain Al’s strapping son was marked as a sire prospect from the day that he won his first start in January 2020.

Just three weeks later, on Met day, he won his first black type race in the Summer Juvenile Stakes equally impressively and then went on to become Cape Champion 2yo of the year.
