Friday 20 June 2025. And then there were 27. Sean Tarry’s scratching of SA Derby winner Legend Of Arthur has reduced the Hollywoodbets Durban July queue to 27 entries, vying for a berth in the final line-up of a maximum of 18 plus 2 reserves.

Legend Of Arthur, who was Richard Fourie’s back-up ride, but has a medical issue, has left Sean Tarry with just one ticket in the shape of the borderline Litigation. Tarry last won the Durban July in 2013 with Heavy Metal, registering a double after winning with Pomodoro the previous year.
The major unknown at this point remains the participation of Justin Snaith’s Eight On Eighteen, whose presence – or absence – dramatically influences the final field. The Sporting Post has received conflicting reports over the past two days and will wait for the official nod from the Snaith yard.
Final declarations are due on Monday, and the ‘class of 2025’ will be revealed on Gallop TV at 11h00 on Tuesday when the draw for barrier positions will also take place.
The traditional public gallops for the KZN-based runners will be held at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Thursday 26 June, commencing at 06h30 for 07h00. All are welcome to attend. Free coffee and pastries will be served.
