The mighty Frankel was unbeaten in twelve career starts when proving his stamina reserves beyond 1600m in sauntering clear in the Juddmonte International Stakes in 2012.
Today it is the turn of Baaeed to emulate that same feat and allay any doubters. The York first race is off at 14h50.
William Haggas, who also saddles Dubai Honour, adopted a typically patient approach with his Sea The Stars colt, but a narrow victory in the Oueen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot (October 2021) earmarked Baaeed as a potential equine superstar.
Since returning to the track in 2022, the Shadwell Stud-owned four-year-old has added three further victories – Lockinge Stakes, Queen Anne Stakes, and the Sussex Stakes – to his unblemished record (9 from 9).
His sire Sea The Stars was an exceptional racehorse himself, enjoying Group 1 success in the 2000 Guineas, the Derby, the Coral Eclipse, the Juddmonte International,Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe during a remarkable 2009. Furthermore, Baaeed is a brother to the classy 2800m winner Hukum, which offers another strong indication that he’ll safely negotiate this extra yardage.
A tenth straight win for Baaeed would be a fantastic result for the sport Horse Racing, but there is no denying that he’ll have to emerge firing on all cylinders with last year’s winner Mishriff and the young pretender Native Trail – winner of the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas – heading the opposition.
