WSB Met – Charles Dickens Won’t Run

'He may be back for the Met in 2024'- Candice

Boom 3yo Charles Dickens will not take his place in the 2023 WSB Gr1 Cape Town Met.

The favourite for Saturday’s R2 million Gr1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate is on the verge of his seventh straight victory after winning the Hollywoodbets Gr1 Cape Guineas in fine style last month.

One of 25 remaining entries for the Cape flagship race on 28 January, Charles Dickens faces his sternest test on Saturday in the prestigious weight-for-age mile.

But he won’t go on to the Met three weeks later.

“He has done magnificently well this season and we don’t feel it is fair to push him by running him in the Met. He can always come back for the 2024 renewal,” trainer Candice Bass-Robinson told the Sporting Post on Monday.

The only supplementary entry to date for the Met is WSB Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner Make It Snappy. Final supplementary entries for the 2000m contest close at 11h00 on Monday 10 January, when weights will be published.
