Jockeys allowed to bet

Top New Zealand jockey David Walker faces charges after a Damien Oliver-like betting scandal.

Walker, 38, had his licence withdrawn on Thursday and faces charges of pulling up his mount to collect from betting $500-plus on a rival in the same race.

He faces a life disqualification if found guilty.

The fact that jockeys are allowed to bet in NZ is not expected to play in his favour.

He is alleged to have ridden Watch Your Man to lose to St Ransom at Awapuni on August 16 and was captured by cameras collecting his winnings.

Walker told stewards he did not ride his mount out because his hands “cramped’’.

New Zealand stewards are now investigating other Walker rides.
