American Pharoah – Kentucky Derby winner
After making history on the track this year with American Pharoah, Zayat Stables also made some headlines at the Keeneland September yearling sale on Wednesday 16 September, going to $1.5 million to land a Bernardini filly.
The $1.5 million price makes the bay filly, consigned by Gainesway, agent, the highest-priced filly so far at this year’s Keeneland September sale and second-highest priced yearling overall.
Bred by Three Chimneys, the filly is a sister to multiple grade I winner and sire To Honor and Serve and grade I winner Angela Renee.
“She’s gorgeous; Mr. Zayat is in for a very good run,” said Three Chimneys chairman Goncalo Torrealba.
The filly’s dam, stakes-winning Deputy Minister mare Pilfer, has also produced Elnaawi, a stakes-winning son of Street Sense.
“She has it all; pedigree, physical. She was elegant and composed. She walked like a dream,” said Gainesway’s Michael Hernon. “She could be any kind. It was a very fair price, but it could be looked upon as a bargain in a couple of years, if she were to win a grade I. She could be worth multiples of this price. She was fantastic. She just exudes class. She’s a wonderful prospect.”
The filly is the seventh yearling to sell for $1 million or more at the sale.
“There was a lot of support for this filly from multiple buyers,” Hernon said. “We appreciate the support and the opportunity provided by Three Chimneys and Mr. Torrealba, Chris Baker, Doug Cauthen, and I want especially to thank yearling manager Wayne Smith.”
