The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that an Inquiry was held in Cape Town on Tuesday, 17 June 2025, Jockey Gavin Lerena was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7.

The particulars being that whilst riding SOHOT SOWHAT, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to LA DIVINA and BELA VISTA at the 100m in Race 8, the RACECAPE POWERED BY Hollywoodbets CLASS 4 at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse on 11 February 2025.
Due to Jockey Lerena not attending the Inquiry, the Inquiry Board entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf, and after deliberation, he was found guilty of the charge.
After considering the evidence, as well as taking Gavin Lerena’s record pertaining to this type of contravention into account, a penalty of a suspension from riding in races for a period of ten (10) days was imposed.
Lerena has the Right of Appeal against both the finding and the penalty imposed.
