Misuse Of Crop – Matsunyane Fined & Suspended

Has right of appeal against finding and penalty

The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that at an Inquiry held in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, 16 June 2025, Jockey Kabelo Matsunyane was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M in Appendix E on the use of the crop).

The particulars being that he misused his crop by striking CHARMING CHEETAH more than twelve times (14) which was not warranted when considering the circumstances of the race, during the running of Race 6, the Gr1 Gold Medallion at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on 31 May 2025.

Jockey Matsunyane pleaded not guilty but was found guilty of the charge.

The Inquiry Board, after considering the evidence presented, Jockey Matsunyane’s recent record pertaining to this type of contravention and the status of the race, imposed a penalty of a suspension from riding in races for a period of fourteen (14) days, and a fine of R20 250 (twenty thousand, two hundred and fifty Rand).

Jockey Matsunyane was given the Right of Appeal against both the finding and the penalty imposed.
