Pomp And Power – Must Go Close Today

A bumper treble feature day at the races

An exciting ten-race programme is set for Hollywoodbets Greyville today and features the Gr1 Daily News 2000, Gr1 Woolavington 2000 and the Gr3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup.

There is a R1 million Pick 6 carryover with an estimated pool of R5 million. The first race is due off at 11h10.

The current favourite for the Hollywoodbets Durban July, Pomp And Power takes his place in the Gr1 Daily News 2000.

He ran a very good race when finishing third in the Gr2 WSB Guineas last time. He is a versatile sort who raced from a handy position that day and stayed on strongly in the run down to the line.

He was super-impressive when winning the Gr1 Cape Derby in his penultimate start.

The son of Vercingetorix jumps from pole position and with no clear frontrunner in the race, he can dictate his own terms and may be hard to peg back.

Paul Lafferty saddles Southern Cape in Race 3 and she represents decent each way value. She is much better than her last two starts suggest. It must be noted that the horse that finished fourth in her last outing has come out and won since.

She won her only attempt over this course and distance, four runs ago. The daughter of Flower Alley is back against her own sex this afternoon and Keagan de Melo may be able to get the best out of her.

Anton Marcus is not riding today.
