Racing TV Stalwart Set For Return

'Healthy - and there were no warning signs'

Popular racing television presenter Cecil Mthembu could be back on the small screen by the end of September after a cancer shock and subsequent treatment saw him sidelined for some months.

Following reader inquiries, the Sporting Post chatted to one of the last remaining stalwarts of the Tellytrack era on Thursday.

Cecil Mthembu – health shock from left field

The Johannesburg-based 62 year old made the transition to 4Racing TV in 2021 but found his world turned upside down when diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“I appreciate the interest shown by the Sporting Post readers. And yes it’s been a tough time. The cancer arrived without any prewarning or signs. I have been fortunate to have been very healthy for much of my life. I’d really like to take this opportunity to implore all racing fans to take the trouble to undergo routine wellness checks. I was fortunate to catch it in time and am currently in the process of radiation treatment. I will probably require six monthly check-ups after returning to work, “ he added.

A private person who has avoided the limelight, despite being in the public eye on most racedays, Cecil said he was not really a fan of social media, and his racing studio work took up much of his time.

“The support has been unbelievable. I purposely avoided going public with my medical issues. Thankfully my journey has been made so much easier with a lot of support from friends, family and my colleagues. I must also say a massive word of gratitude to my Manager Keshree Naidoo, and the 4Racing leadership, who have shown so much empathy. I can’t wait to get back to what is all of our passion – the great game of horseracing. Thanks again to all -this call was a lovely surprise.”

Good luck Cecil!
