After the recent confusion created by jockeys being suspended and then some being allowed to ride within the 48 hour suspension period and some not, the NHA’s Arnold Hyde was quick to clarify the position after former SA champion S’manga Khumalo was stood down at Fairview on Friday.
Smanga Khumalo – tooth ache
Khumalo will be allowed to ride at today’s Classic day race meeting at Turffontein – as long as he produces a medical certificate giving him the go-ahead.
Tabnews reports that Khumalo was stood down from Friday’s racing at Fairview due to a troublesome tooth abscess – exacerbated by a bump during the running of Race 2 in PE.
Arnold Hyde, Racing Control Executive of the National Horseracing Authority, told Tellytrack viewers a possible two-day suspension in terms of NHA rule 25.12 after a stand down would not be enforced as, with medical attention overnight, Khumalo should be fit to ride.
The former champion has three engagements on the Turffontein card – all for trainer Joey Soma.
His most important ride is aboard Skye Lane in the Gr1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic, Race 8. The daughter of Pathfork will be making her debut for Soma after transferring from Dan Katz’s Cape Town stable.
