Queen’s horse misses out

The teenage French jockey Mickaël Barzalona announced his arrival as a world-class jockey by driving Pour Moi to a last-gasp success in the Derby, which he celebrated in equally dramatic style by standing up in his irons three strides before he crossed the line, inches ahead of Treasure Beach. The Queen’s horse, Carlton House, was sent off favourite but could finish only third.

Bred by Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley Stud, Carlton House is by Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry out of Talented, winner of the 1993 Sun Chariot Stakes. Carlton House was one of four yearlings given to the Queen as a present by Sheikh Mohammed.

A dozen potential Investec Derby heroes have joined the list of entries for the season’s premier Classic, staged over a mile and a half at Epsom Downs on Saturday June 4, worth £1.25 million. Last year, Workforce became the first Investec Derby winner to have been entered at the second stage. There are now 134 horses engaged for the 2011 Investec Derby.
