Tabnews reports that Mr Burger trained 55 winners under his own name between 2009-15, after previously serving as assistant to Herman Brown Snr, Selvan Moodley, Weiho Marwing and Riaan Van Reenen.

The best he trained was the stayer Grey Cossack. He won the Listed Durbanville Cup in 2010, before a shock 40-1 triumph in the Gold Vase at Greyville in June 2011.

After having a leg amputated due to diabetes complications, he entered a training partnership with Rian Van Reenen, which produced another 23 successes up to December 2018.

The Sporting Post is informed that a funeral service will be held at the Burger Ottery home at 10h00 today.
