Work Accident – Gqeberha Jock Sidelined

Trotting, and then...

Gqeberha-based jockey Eldin Webber is likely to be out of action for what could be more than three months following a freak accident while riding work at Fairview on Monday morning.

Assistant trainer Dean Smith told the Sporting Post that the 40 year old Eldin was trotting when he let another horse pass him.

“Unfortunately, the other horse lashed out as he passed, kicking Eldin on the leg. We are happy to hear he is doing well after the operation and wish him a speedy recovery,” added Smith.

A philosophical Eldin, sounding relaxed, no doubt as a result of the effects of the morphine, told the Sporting Post that he had fractured his shin and suffered muscle damage in the process. During an operation, the impacted bone had been reset.

“I am at Greenacres Hospital and the staff have been fantastic. I have been told I will be in a cast for eight weeks and then will see the Specialist, after which I will be in a moon boot. I have been overwhelmed by the support and interest from stakeholders and from my colleagues, who were all here today. Thanks for the call. I appreciate it very much,” he added.

We wish Eldin well.
