The Full Monty

2018 BSA Cape Yearling Sale

It’s the Full Monty!

The Bare Facts: VALUE & QUALITY

Sunday 25 February starts 13h00 at Mistico, Paarl

Buyers ruled the roost at the 2017 Cape Yearling Sale where the average price of 2016 was more than halved.

The bottom line is that history proves that this regional sale remains one of South Africa’s best value for money markets and the honour roll of winners is a tribute to the outstanding quality produced by our resilient breeders in tough times.

The 2017 average was R60 545 while the median was R40 000. In 2016 the average was R134 200 and the median R90 000. But those numbers hardly tie up with the big names to come out of the sale!

Classic prospect Surcharge

Exciting classic hope and Gr2 Gauteng Guineas entry Surcharge was the most recent big name to come under the hammer at the Cape Yearling Sale. He follows in the golden hoofprints of champions Pocket Power, Hammie’s Hooker and Mother Russia, as well as Gr1 winners O Caesour, Sarabande, Silver Arc, Sparkling Gem, Royal Bencher and Villandry, as well as a host of stakes winners.

The class of 2018 is packed with some diverse youngsters from many of the country’s top farms. Proven stallions of the ilk of Elusive Fort, Gimmethegreenlight, Judpot, Querari, Twice Over and What A Winter are all represented at the one day sale.

Well performed sires with first South African crop yearlings on offer include Captain Of All, Flower Alley, Soft Falling Rain, Time Thief, Vercingetorix and Wylie Hall.

If you are buying to win the Met or the Queen’s Plate, you find yourself in the right place. But the announcement of the Emperors Place Breeze-Up Sale for Johannesburg on 4th November also opens up wider options – what about a potential pinhook opportunity?

“I have inspected a large majority of the lots on offer and there are some outstanding specimens from proven breeders who have the track record of producing winners. I would not hesitate to recommend a pin-hook into the Emperors Palace Breeze-Up Sale in November,” said Jehan Malherbe, the internationally proven senior statesman of South African Bloodstock Consultants.

But most importantly, don’t miss our FREE Buyer’s Guide.  It is an amazing, detailed summary of dam and siblings of sale prospects. It gives insight to what to expect of individuals in terms of class, stamina, sale price. No serious buyer should be without it.  Click below to uncover the hidden truths….

Buy Low, Sell High!

Pinhooking is an old Kentucky tobacco term. A speculator would buy a farmer’s young plants and later identify them with a pinned note at market. Buying the plants low and selling high would return substantial profit for the speculators.

In terms of thoroughbred auctions, pinhooking describes the practice of buying yearlings, overseeing their breaking-in and training, and eventually re-selling them as race-ready two-year-olds in training.
