The 2015 edition of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale which kicks off on Wednesday, 7 January, will mark the 30th anniversary of the popular Australian sale.

The inaugural sale was held in 1986 and saw a bay colt by Lunchtime go under the hammer for $22,000. The following year the colt became the inaugural Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner and later a breed shaping stallion and broodmare sire – known as Snippets.

Recent racetrack results have seen Magic Millions as the leading source of stakes winners in Australia, with 177 successes at black type level in the last racing season including 21 Group One victories. SA newsmakers Wylie Hall and Harry’s Son are both Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale graduates.

The Gold Coast Yearling Sale also has a reputation as the sale to source a future stallion. Last season it was Zoustar and Sizzling, this year it’s Dissident, Shooting To Win and Rubick, who are set to join the lengthy honour roll of Magic Millions graduates in the breeding barn.  South Africa’s 2012 Queen’s Plate winner, Gimmethegreenlight, was also sold under the Magic Millions banner, albeit on their 2009 Magic Millions Weanling Sale.

“We are not supposed to be the number one sales company in Australia but we are,’’ said co-owner Gerry Harvey.  “We’ve driven it and we’ve reached this position through a lot of years of hard work.”  He and wife Katie have turned the week-long Magic Millions sales and race day into a global event, which lures buyers and personalities from all over the world.  The Queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips has been appointed the ambassador for this year’s event.  She was seen at Surfer’s Paradise earlier today presiding over the barrier draw for Saturday’s Magic Millions Raceday, which features the $2 million Jeep Magic Millions 2YO Classic and the $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.

The sale, which boasts 960 lots, gets under way at 11am (Queensland time) on Wednesday, 7 January and concludes on Tuesday, 13 January 2015.
