50 Years Of Quality Thoroughbreds

The rich legacy continues

With a proud history founded in 1974, Varsfontein Stud has bred 49 Gr1 winners to date. It started with a flourish under original owner Anthony Kalmanson with Varsfontein’s first stallion, Mexico II (sire of champion Harry Hotspur) making a significant impact on the breed in SA.

Varsfontein was started in 1974 (Pic – Jeremy Nelson)

The very first yearling sold by Varsfontein – Kings Rhapsody – won 11 races including the Smirnoff, equivalent to what is now the Gr1 Gold Medallion.

That rich legacy continues and this year the farm celebrates its 50th year of breeding success.
