Smith Lauds Algoa Cup Day

'Let's push the good news'

While horseracing doesn’t specialise in dishing out accolades and focussing on the positives, Hollywood-sponsored trainer Gavin Smith has lauded the organisation and success of Sunday’s Algoa Cup meeting at Fairview.

“After all the negatives and the stakes rationalisation of recent times, we really need to focus on the positives in horseracing and Sunday’s Algoa Cup racemeeting was a big winner for East Cape racing,” said Smith, who saddled two winners on the day.

He said that he wanted  to extend a word of appreciation and thanks from his team and their patrons who attended what was a very well organised event.

“The venue was very professionally decorated and the food was excellent. It really cannot be any easy task to cater for so many people and especially to keep everyone happy. I really believe that the people behind the scenes deserve a word of congratulations and appreciation for a job well done.”

He said that a special mention must be made of the efforts of Phumelela’s Karin le Roux, Marilyn Smith of the Racing Association and Annelie Oosthuizen of Petronalla Catering, as well as Phumelela’s National Sales Manager Steven Karam for his efforts in securing the sponsorship.

“They all contributed in no small measure to making it a memorable occasion and a big thank-you must also go to new Algoa Cup sponsors Socrasync Toro ya Africa. I believe they enjoyed the event and I’m sure all who attended will be back next year to savour the wonderful atmosphere and the amazing food,” said Smith.

The next racemeeting at Fairview is on Friday 1 November.
