Breeders are bullish about the future. That’s the message from the annual Cape Mare & Weanling sale last week.
The norm for mare sales is that a few top lots attract all the interest, and that the bottom falls out for the rest, including (or rather, especially) the weanlings. Surprisingly, this year’s mare sale not only had a wide spread of good prices, but also a decent middle market. Fillies for stud made impact, while pin-hookers appear to have been active among the large number of weanling-offers, together with a few astute trainers who got in early.
