The recent spate of jockey injuries continued on Wednesday, 22 August 2018, when apprentice Mpume Mjoka took a bad spill at Randjesfontein training centre.

Mpume was transported to Sunninghill hospital and where he was diagnosed with a badly dislocated knee and admitted for emergency surgery shortly before midday.  The procedure, which included a vascular bypass as well as repair to damaged nerves, took four hours, but Mpume responded well and the medical team are satisfied with the results.

On Wednesday evening he was joined by his mother and sister who drove up from Durban to be by his side.

On Thursday morning Mpume underwent a second procedure, which was successfully concluded by lunchtime, and the medical team are positive about his progress so far.

Mpume hit the headlines in June 2017, when he represented South Africa at the prestigious Longines Future Stars meeting at Chantilly, steering the Danny de Waele-trained Beaupreau to a 1.14 length victory.

The twenty-two year old is currently in the fifth year of his apprenticeship and is based at the Gauteng Jockey Academy.

We wish him all the very best for a speedy recovery.
