Arqana Sales Ring

The Elie de Brignac sales complex in Deauville will host the October Yearling Sale, the third ARQANA yearling sale. The catalogue is now available on www.arqana.com and includes 600 yearlings. The sale takes place over four days, Monday 20th to Thursday 23rd October 2014, with the Monday session comprising 185 lots and representing the sale’s selected Part 1, while Part 2 will include the three following sessions, comprising 145, 155 and 116 lots respectively. Almost 100% of the yearlings catalogued are eligible for the owners’ premiums in France.

Year on year, the October Yearling Sale is proving an outstanding source of Gr1 winners. Since June 2013, graduates have annexed nine Gr1 races, while the tally for the sole 2014 season already reaches five Gr1’s. The event has an ideal new flag-bearer in the unbeaten AVENIR CERTAIN, who was sold by Coulonces Consignment to trainer Jean-Claude Rouget for €45,000 two years ago. The first-crop daughter of Le Havre is perfect in six outings including the Gr1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas), Gr1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks) and Gr2 Prix de la Nonette.

Another Classic hero to have been snapped up at the October Yearling Sale is THE GREY GATSBY, who followed an eye-catching success in the Gr2 Dante Stakes with an equally impressive display in the Gr1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby). The son of Mastercraftsman was sold by Haras du Cadran to Stephen Hillen for €24,000 and only found the great AUSTRALIA too good in the Gr1 Juddmonte International Stakes last time out.

Treve

Arqana October Yearling Sale graduate Treve

SPIRITJIM boasts seven wins from nine starts and looked like he wasn’t stretching his limits when producing a devastating turn of foot to take the Gr1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on his latest outing so far. The four-year-old Galileo half-brother to Classic victor SILVER FROST topped the 2011 October Yearling Sale when knocked down to MAB Agency for €310,000, having been consigned by its breeder Haras des Sablonnets.

CHARM SPIRIT, who landed the Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat on Bastille Day this year, was bred and consigned by Ecurie des Monceaux at the 2012 renewal, when trainer Freddy Head bought him for €140,000.

Last but not least, the fillies TREVE and VORDA, who topped the standings of their respective generations in 2013, both went through the October Yearling Sale. The mighty Treve went on to register a rare Diane-Vermeille-Arc hat-trick and Vorda to take the Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes and run a gallant 2nd in the Gr1 Prix Morny.

This year alone, 50 individual graduates of the October Yearling Sale have posted 80 Group/Listed performances – including 27 wins – while the class of 2013, now two-year-olds, have already registered 180 wins or places.
