Gr3 Jubilee Handicap at Turffontein, Sunday

Heavy Metal

Top Class. Topweight Heavy Metal is bang in form and should go close in Sunday’s Gr3 Betting World Jubilee Handicap at Turffontein

The Gr1 President’s Champions Challenge winner Heavy Metal gets called upon to give weight all round to some good sorts in Sunday’s Gr3 Betting World Jubilee Handicap to be run over 1800m at Turffontein. While it is a genuine test of character, the son of Silvano could be equal to the test.

Heavy Metal has his July prep here and while carrying topweight he certainly has earned the privilege of carrying the pudding.

Best

Heavy Metal bounced back to best form with a smooth win in the Gr1 President’s Champions Challenge on Champions Day and followed up by steamrolling his opponents in a Pinnacle Stakes three weeks back. He has won five of his 18 starts and a good effort here will put the cherry on top of his July prep. If Heavy Metal is to be beaten, then an up and coming 3yo could be the one to do the damage.

Masterful

GeoffWoodruff’s smart Jet Master colt Master Sabina lacks the experience of the year older Heavy Metal. But his star is definitely on the ascendancy. Master Sabina was surprisingly beaten over the course and distance by Eastern Cobbler last time out, but receives something in the order of 10,5kgs from Heavy Metal and must come into the reckoning as a promising 3yo.

He makes up for a lack of experience in terms of pure ability, and should be a serious contender. His owner Mike De Broglio celebrated his first Gr1 win last Saturday in the Woolavington 2000.

Lightly Raced

Gary Alexander’s Meissa is a lightly raced 4yo, who returned from a seven month break last time to run Heavy Metal to just over a length over the Turffontein mile. A winner of 3 of his 7 starts, he now meets the Tarry horse on six kgs better terms and must come into the reckoning if not flat after that exertion.

Sealed

Gavin Van Zyl sends out the promising Shogunnar and the gallant stayer Seal. Shogunnar meets Heavy Metal on 2,5kgs better terms than when going down 2,25 lengths in the President’s Champions Challenge. We have said it before, but will say it again.

The son of Solskjaer is the best one time winner on earth and is just itching to register his first stakes winner. Piere Strydom rides him again. It looks way too short for Seal, who is obviously being kept on the boil for bigger things in the pipeline down KZN way.

Tough Call

War Horse ran well below par in the Gr1 Daily News 2000, and he gets asked plenty to travel back to Johannesburg and take on this level of competition. He has been below his best for some time and cannot be fancied to win this. Mike De Kock sends out a trio of Checcetti, Eightfold Path and Mane Dane and neither appear to have any serious winning aspirations on current form.

Saeed Mohideen’s four tiem winner Zambucca is very talented and seldom far off the action. Muzi Yeni rides the Victory Moon winner from a good draw, and he warrants consideration if at best. The old man Smanjemanje returns from a four month break and may need the outing. Heavy Metal gets a narrow vote to beat Sabina Park and Meissa.
