Beware The Ones That Got Away

Cape Mare & Weanling Sale

Cape Mare & Weanling Sale – 26 May 2011 at Sandringham Farm, Muldersvlei

.

Every broodmare sale has them. The ones that got away. Mares who subsequent to changing hands do the apparently unexpected, and produce a Big One.
Think what the names would have been of such gems like River Jetez or Pierre Jourdan if their dams had not been sold with them inside. Someone else would have named them, and basked in glory.
It’s that time again.
A large number of Cape Mare Sale entries, accomplished and not,  in foal to brand new sires who haven’t yet had the chance to fail. Who knows which of those stallions will be the next Jet Master, or Captain Al.
Hope and passion, the life-blood of breeding.
KAREL MIEDEMA takes a look at what’s behind the names in the catalogue.

Ahmad
Finding a dual Equus Champion at auction is unusual, but here’s one: Gr1 & Gr2 winning stayer (133) Bella Bianca (17yo; dam by Saint Sever). She’s getting on in age, but she’s had just six foals, of which three raced and one won twice from 4 starts. The other two raced only five times between them, so there may be issues – but it would be premature to say that she has failed as a broodmare. Can she still deliver something special? Her current yearling is a Jet Master, so we’ll see. Bella Bianca is inbred 2×3 to Good Manners, who has a Mr P. affinity. She sells in foal to new AP Indy stallion Judpot, on a November service.

Al Mufti
Lightly raced stakes placed 2-time winning sprinter (123) Al Marina (9yo; dam by Fair Season) is full sister to a 1400m winner and is the best of the recent progeny from the female line, which goes to Sister Sublime. She’s not had runners (her first foal is a current 2yo by Silvano). Sells in foal to new sire Latino Magic, on an early November service.
Winning miler (120) Woodland Melody (8yo; dam by Fort Wood) is full sister to Woodland City, a lightly raced stakes placed stakes winner of 5 races. Their dam is half sister to Gr1 Gold Cup winner Colonial Girl and is closely related to Gr2 winners Dog Rose and Kestrel. She sells in foal for the third time, following two foals by Tiger Ridge, to Right Approach, on an early November cover.
Twice winning sprinter (46) Jezebel’s Wings (11yo; dam by Peacetime) is half sister to Gr3 sprinter Hot Masala and to 4 other sprinters, from a variety of sires. This is the female line of Royal Affair mare Indian Spice, and speed is the key. Her first two foals are all her runners to date, both multiple winners, by Silvano & Jet Master. There are three more Jet Master siblings in the pipeline. She sells in foal to new stallion Judpot on a late October cover, with a free return guarantee. The mating brings together the mare’s sire Al Mufti and Judpot’s sire AP Indy, whose dam is half sister to Al Mufti.
Winning miler (85) Riyal (4yo; dam by Silvino) is 3-part sister to Champion racemare Arabian Lass, Prairie Breeze, Princely Affair, and the dam of Smart Banker. The mare has a winning full sister and two winning half sisters, including a 2-time winner by Tiger Ridge whose dam is half sister to Al Mufti. That is interesting, since the mare sells in foal (for the first time, on a November cover), to new stallion Mambo In Seattle, whose dam is half sister to Tiger Ridge (and whose grandam therefore is half sister to Al Mufti).

All Fired Up
Stakes winner of five races up to 1900m (11) Cool It Mon (16yo; dam by Jamaico) is half sister to five winners. She has produced two winners to date, from 3 runners (and six foals in all, incl a current yearling & foal). She sells in foal to Trippi, on a November cover – an interesting mating as the mare’s sire All Fired Up might well be a good match for Trippi.

Ashtontown
Five time winning sprinter (102) Sun Chaser (10yo; dam by Springing Leopard) was not covered this time round. She sells with her only previous foal at foot, a Surging River filly.

From 3 runners to date she has two winners. In the pipeline an unraced 2yo Black Minnaloushe and Silvano yearling. The mare sells in foal to new AP Indy stallion Judpot, on an early September cover.

Black Minnaloushe
Unraced (135) Bouncer (2yo; dam by Caesour) is half sister to two winners, their lightly raced dam a winning full sister to SA Fillies Classic winner Caughtintheslips. She’s in foal to new sire Judpot, on a September cover. Judpot’s dam Miesque and the mare’s damsire Caesour are both by Nureyev out of Graustark line mares with more behind it, which looks an interesting 2×3 kin-mating.

Juvenile 1000m winner (129) Aussitot (3yo; dam by Dilum) is out of an unraced half sister to two European Graded stakes performers, from the female line that got Blushing Groom and SA Gr1 winner Badger’s Drift. The mare is kinbred 3×3 to full siblings Special (dam of Nureyev) and Thatch. She sells in foal (for the first time) to new AP Indy sire Judpot, on a November cover. The female line traces to La Troienne, of which the mare’s sire Captain Al also has a dose. Building further on this should be a good option. Sells as a mare for stud, yet to be covered.

The mare is kinbred 2×2 to 3-part brothers Sadler’s Wells and Nureyev. Interesting pedigree to try and build on ( with lots of Mr P., maybe).

Unraced (135) Bouncer (2yo; dam by Caesour) is half sister to two winners, their lightly raced dam a winning full sister to SA Fillies Classic winner Caughtintheslips. She’s in foal to new sire Judpot, on a September cover. Winning miler (101) Sugar Icing (7yo; dam by Irish River) is half sister to four winners out of a full sister to two French stakes winners. Her dam is a close relative to the dam of Gr1 winner Nysaean. Sells in foal to Toreador, on a December cover.
Unraced (31) Frosty (6yo; dam by Model Man) is half sister to SA Oaks winner Sabina Park and to five other winners. The mare is dam of 3 foals, the oldest a current 2yo who has placed (rated 78). Her current foal is by new sire Judpot, and she’s again in foal to that one, on a late November cover.

Her first foal is a filly by Sail From Seattle, and she’s again in foal to that sire, the covering date not listed.

Zabeel
Lightly raced 2000m winner (18) Double Tryst (6yo; dam by Rhythm) is a New Zealand-bred full sister to an eight-time winning stayer in Australia.
