Stoppers Never Win

Sage advice from a major owner

Stoppers Never Win, according to Braam Van Huysteen

Charismatic and well known racehorse owner Braam Van Huysteen provided the quote of the weekend after his Antonius Pius filly Disney Queen won the seventh race at Kenilworth on Saturday.

The Tekkie Town supremo Van Huysteen, who lives in George, was on track with his daughter Bianca to enjoy his runners.

The Carl Burger trained Disney Queen came up at 33 to 1 under apprentice Xavier Carstens and the smiling Van Huysteen admitted in the post race interview that he had backed the consistent Western Movie (5/2), who had run third behind runaway winner Daring Dave in the fourth race.

In a tongue in cheek reference to the National Responsible Gambling programme’s ‘Gamble With Your Head Not Your Heart: Winners Know When To Stop” slogan, Van Huysteen poked some lighthearted fun at himself.

“Ag Stan. That’s how it goes and we were a bit disappointed with Western Movie. But we got it all back here plus interest. They say winners know when to stop, but it holds true that stoppers never win, either,” he laughed.
