Brandon Lerena – on his way to Mauritius

KwaZulu-Natal based rider Brandon Lerena will ride for leading trainer Ricky Maingard in Mauritius for the new season.

Maingard’s request to sign Lerena as his new jockey for 2015 was approved by the MTC’s Board of Administrators at its first meeting.

A capable and very underrated rider, Lerena is no stranger to Mauritius and rode for Alain Perdrau during the early part of the 2011 season.

His current record in Mauritius is 12 wins from a total of 67 rides.

Lerena has ridden 25 winners this season from 186 rides but has not seen action since riding at Scottsville on 7 December.

He had surgery shortly thereafter to have a bone removed from behind his Achilles tendons that was causing pain and pressure.

The condition is commonly referred to as ‘pump bumps’ from riding and overuse. The recovery period is normally around 6 to 8 weeks.
