Byword’s Stakes Strike

Three yearlings at Sibaya next month

Mauritzfontein stallion Byword was represented by his first stakes winner when his 2yo gelded son Rain Spider won the Gr3 Champion Juvenile Stakes at Borrowdale on Sunday.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Rain Spider had been third on debut and built on that good effort when winning the Champion Juvenile Stakes by a neck over favourite Pas De Deux.

The gelding, a R15 000 buy from the 2017 National 2YO Sale, was produced by the Fort Wood mare Money Spider.

Rain Spider is one of three  two-year-old winners for Byword this season, with the latter’s other juveniles in 2017-2018 including G1 contender and Sentinel Stakes runner up Crown And Country.

Byword’s first crop has produced 17 individual winners thus far including Swallow Stakes placegetter No More Words, Umzimkhulu contender Camphoratus, and KZN Breeders Million Mile entrant Scrabble.

A top class performer, Byword was the Champion Older Miler in France in 2010, and his seven victories included the 2010 G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and 2011 G2 Prix Dollar.

The half-brother to multiple Gr1 winner Proviso and Gr2 Prix Eugene Adam victor Finche has three fillies on offer at the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale, set to be held at Sibaya Entertainment World next month.
