Eudey Calls It A Day

Tough times take toll on small yards

Summerveld trainer Craig Eudey has called it a day.

An assistant to trainer Alistair Gordon for over 26 years, Eudey ventured on his own a decade ago and will perhaps be best remembered for the very talented Woodborough gelding Thandolwami, the first horse he ever bought.

The Gr1 placed galloper ran in the 2009 Vodacom Durban July.

Eudey trained 1 winner from 30 runners this season and last season saddled 3 winners from 173 runners.

He is part owner of the Mike Miller-trained Eetee who won the third race at Greyville on Wednesday.

Writing on a racing forum, Eudey indicated that he felt that it was not viable for the small yards so had been forced to make a decision.

“The money owed to me, even as a small stable, was just too much and I had very little hope of retrieving it. I will still be around and will help in anyway I can, especially here for Gold Circle where I have many friends and they have been good to me. I know there are many trainers thinking of giving up. Something needs to be done for them. Racing will not survive well with just big owners and trainers IMHO,” he stated.
