Cartier – Enable Can Cement Standing

Cartier Awards honours at stake

All eyes will be on 2017 Cartier Horse of the Year Enable (128) as Khalid Abdullah’s homebred aims to create history by becoming the first three-time winner of the 2400m Arc on Sunday.

All eyes on Enable

Enable comes into the race on a 12-race unbeaten streak and this season has captured the Gr1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park, Gr1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes at Ascot and the Gr1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York.

Gr1 Irish Champion Stakes scorer Magical (168) is the overall leader in the Cartier Horse of the Year category after a busy campaign and the four-year-old is set to renew rivalries with Enable alongside her year younger stablemate Japan (108), who defeated Crystal Ocean (112) in the G1 Juddmonte International at York on his latest start.

Also at Longchamp, Battaash (80) could challenge Blue Point (106) in the Cartier Sprinter standings provided he comes out on top in the Gr1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp over five furlongs.

Godolphin has tightened its grip on the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt Award following Earthlight’s victory in the Gr1 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket last Saturday, September 28.

Trained in France by Andre Fabre, Earthlight (72 points) is now unbeaten in five starts at up to six furlongs, with his Newmarket success coming on the back of a neck verdict in the Gr1 Darley Prix Morny at Deauville on August 18.

Godolphin is also responsible another unbeaten Shamardal colt in Pinatubo (48). The Charlie Appleby-trained runner posted the highest-rated performance for 25 years when thrashing the opposition by nine lengths in the seven-furlong Gr1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh, Ireland, on Saturday, September 15.

Earthlight is unlikely to run again this season, while Pinatubo will have the chance to cement his claims for Cartier honours in the Gr1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on day two of the Dubai Future Champions Festival, October 12.

Both colts have the chance to emulate their sire Shamardal, who scooped the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt Award in 2004 following an unbeaten campaign for trainer Mark Johnston.

Gr1 Darley Prix Morny second Raffle Prize (64 points) retains her lead in the race to be crowned Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly despite being worn down by Irish raider Millisle (36 points) in the Gr1 highlight for fillies at Newmarket, the Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes over six furlongs.

Love (40 points) is still in contention for the award after securing Gr1 honours in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh on September 15. The Galileo filly is set to step up in trip for the Gr1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket on Friday, October 11.

Royal Ascot scorer Daahyeh finished second behind Love at the Curragh and has since moved on to 48 points after a battling victory in the G2 Shadwell Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket on September 27.

Europe’s premier all-aged Flat race, the Gr1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, takes centre stage at Longchamp this Sunday, October 6 and is likely to have a significant impact on the Cartier Horse of the Year standings.

Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly leader Hermosa (112) is among the acceptors for the G1 Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket this Saturday, October 5. The mile contest could revolve around a rematch with Iridessa (66), who edged out Hermosa in the Gr1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on September 14.
