Great season for Zafonic's good son

Klawervlei’s red hot sire Count Dubois had an eye catching winner in Hong Kong on Wednesday. His son Perfect Smart picked his initial Hong Kong score when he saluted in the Fanling Handicap over 1000m at Happy Valley.

Bred by Riethuiskraal, Perfect Smart dug down deep to best runner up Double Master with Glory Boy another length away in third.

His sire and former Group One winner Count Dubois is having yet another magnificent season, with his runners including Equus Champion and recent G3 London News Stakes winner French Navy and G3 Three Troikas Stakes/G3 HSH Princess Charlene Of Monaco Starling Stakes heroine Madame Dubois, with the latter looking a leading contender for the upcoming G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas.

Another by Count Dubois, Gr2 WSB Southern Cross Stakes runner up Cuvee Brut, looks a leading fancy for Saturday’s Gr3 Vasco Prix Du Cap.

The son of Zafonic is one of South Africa’s most consistent sires of stakes horses with his top performers including champion Asylum Seeker, Gr1 winners Zaitoon and Zeeno, and the above mentioned French Navy.

Count Dubois, who is also the sire of promising young stallion Biarritz, has six lots on offer at next month’s March Yearling Sale including:

Lot 102 – out of a winning Fort Wood daughter of a stakes winner, this well related filly’s third dam is G2 winner Fair Spanish Lady –the dam of no fewer than four stakes winners.

Lot 107 – bred like smart stakes winner Door Of Deception, this filly’s stakes placed dam is a daughter of Captain Al and the G1 mare Main Emblem

Lot 144– another out of a mare by emerging broodmare sire Captain Al, this filly dam was a high class racemare, who was a good fourth in the then G1 Golden Slipper

Lot 158 – a half brother to a winner, this colt’s second dam is half sister to the Met winning siblings Badger’s Coast and Surfing Home (the latter named Horse Of The Year), as well as to the dam of versatile Derby winner Floatyourboat

Lot 218 – this colt is out of a mare by world leading sire Royal Academy (damsire also of champion sire Fastnet Rock), and from the same family as champions Northern Spur, Salsabil and Second Empire –among others

Lot 240 – out of a mare by Danehill’s champion son Holy Roman Emperor (damsire of last year’s G1 winner Johannes Vermeer), this filly is from the family of Australian G1 winning millionaire Rancho Ruler.
