South African horseracing has been suffering from a dearth of top jockeys as a result of international commitments and injuries.
Lyle Hewitson, Aldo Domeyer, Grant van Niekerk and Brandon Lerena are riding in various international locations, but we have also not seen Anton Marcus, Gavin Lerena or Craig Zackey so far this season.
Tabnews reports that the good news is that those three are on their way back. It was nice to see Zackey at Turffontein last Saturday free of his crutches and almost ready to return to racing.
“I have started riding work and I expect to be back in the next week or so,” he said.
Zackey has been recovering from an operation to both hips after it was discovered he had an overgrown bone attached to his hip socket.
“I was getting pains in my groin and I was battling to get down when I was riding. I also had some cartilage removed from my hip.”
Lerena had been riding with a hand/wrist injury and he is also due back before the end of October.
Marcus is also expected back soon.
