The beautifully bred R3,7 million Dynasty filly Lady Of The House stepped up smartly at her second start at Kenilworth on Saturday to win a good race from a bad draw.
Trainer Brett Crawford says he will take it one step at a time with her – but one cannot help but guage from the twinkle in the eye and a read between the lines that she is an exciting prospect.
The Highlands-bred Lady Of The House, who was foaled on 30 August 2013 and thus celebrated her ‘true’ birthday on Tuesday this past week, is out of the champion racemare Overarching, and was in the news last year as the joint fifth most expensive yearling sold in South Africa in 2015.
She was the top-selling filly on the 2015 CTS Cape Premier Yearling Sale and was also the overall joint third placed top tag on the sale.
The Mayfair Speculators owned 3yo overcame a wide gate to beat the Snaith’s Fort Ruby by a length in the 1400m Maiden Plate. She had run a quiet sixth on an unfancied debut over 200m shorter a month earlier.
“She is very immature and considering that the 1400m is at the bottom of her range, I feel that her win had nice merit,” said trainer Brett Crawford, who added that he would put her away now.
When questioned on her potential, he was typically guarded, suggesting that they would know more about her when she took on winners next time.
“Look, she has the pedigree and looks to make her a serious racehorse. But she needs to strengthen up plenty and with a bit of time off and spring on the way, I am expecting her to develop nicely.”
On her likely optimum trip, he said that everything suggested a ‘mile and further’ in time.
Lady Of The House is by former SA Horse Of The Year, Dynasty out of the top-class Overarching.
The extremely well performed daughter of terrific US sire Arch was a tree times SA Female Champion Sprinter in an illustrious career when trained by veteran Ormond Ferraris. She was a versatile galloper who beat the best in her eleven wins from 1160m to 1600m. Her multiple Gr1 victories included scores in the SA Fillies Sprint and the Horse Chestnut Stakes.
Overarching was bought by Ridgemont Stud for R1,8 million on the recent CTS Mares and Fillies for Stud Sale held at her home base, Highlands.
