The public reaction to the news that the legendary and much loved Equus Award winning journalist Dave Mollett is facing an uncertain 2015 as a result of having to undergo essential and costly surgery has led to the establishment of a ‘Molly Knees Fund’.

The Sporting Post carried a profile on the irrepressible Mollett last weekend, where it was outlined how the 67 year old was facing double knee replacement surgery in February 2015.

Mollett’s colleagues and various members of the horseracing fraternity are rallying around the popular Tellytrack presenter and scribe and have commenced contributions to a fund.

A prominent owner-breeder, who is no stranger to the feature race winner’s enclosure, and who wishes to remain anonymous, was the first to contribute a large donation to kickstart the process.

Molly’s fellow presenters Shaheen Shaw, Cecil Mthembu and Nico Kritsiotis, who have worked with him for many years have supported the fund by pledging a collective amount towards the substantial medical expenses.

After his winner, Dontbeamoegoe, which incidentally won on his birthday at the Vaal last Saturday, charismatic trainer Louis Goosen took heed of his winning horse’s name and offered his support and called on the public to do likewise.

When contacted for comment on Sunday evening, an emotional Mollett said that he had been deeply humbled by the response and support.

Anyone wishing to follow suit and ensure Molly’s safe and sound return to the racetracks of South Africa is asked to make a pledge via e-mail to:

Unless anonymity is specifically requested, it is intended that a regular update of donors will be published.
