Equus: Panel Beaten?

The Equus awards panel were clearly overwhelmed

Inara wins the Gr1 Paddock Stakes at Kenilworth on 2015-01-10

Gr1 Paddock Stakes winner Inara

The 3 year old fillies of the 2014/15 racing season won no less than eleven Gr1 races- a remarkable achievement, writes Peter De Beyer.

In addition to the four Gr 1 races restricted to 3yo fillies, they also made a clean sweep of the five F&M Gr1 races, as well as landing two Gr1 sprints open to all.

In addition, these fillies also won a number of Gr2 and Gr3 races, as well as filling the majority of the F&M Gr 1 runner up spots.

Majmu, Inara and Alboran Sea won two Gr1’s apiece, while all of Same Jurisdiction, Siren’s Call, Carry on Alice, Smart Call and Pine Princess won at the highest level.

The Equus awards panel were clearly overwhelmed by this, selecting only 4 of these heroines as nominees for the awards.

All four of those selected are indeed worthy of the honour, and the winner is likely to be Majmu, although Alboran Sea would not be a surprise if selected- it is very difficult to compare a sprinter against a middle distance runner.

Siren's Call - disappointed that she was not nominated

Siren’s Call – disappointed that she was not nominated

The shock, however, is that dual Gr1 winner Inara is not a nominee. I would think that this is the first time in history that a dual Gr1 winner in any Equus award category has been left off the list of nominees.

I am personally disappointed that Siren’s Call also did not make the list, despite coming within a whisker of winning the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara.
