Should It Be Privileged Information?

'No comment'- a cop out?

The old transparency debate reared its ugly head again in the first at Kenilworth on Tuesday when a smart looking first-timer charged home to win the opening leg of the Bipot.

Sadly for Bipot punters, the National Racing Bureau generated first-timer comments sheet that we published on Tuesday morning showed a stone-cold ‘no comment’ note alongside the name of the Var filly, Bouvier.

The speedball, who races for Kenilworth Racing Director Hassen Adams, was followed home by a 16-1 shot in Winter Five, with the 5-4 favourite Vodka Lime running a dirty third. So Bipot  punters took a serious blow to start the day.

Of the five first-timers that started in the Kenilworth first, only Bouvier (Dan Katz) and Nastergal (Candice Bass-Robinson), who ran a 4,30 length fifth, carried no comment tags.

In the post-race interview, a delighted Dan Katz confirmed that Bouvier had shown nothing on the sand, but had caught the eye when tried on grass – and again when she had passed her stalls certificate. “It’s a pity that she is not a hand higher. To be frank, we don’t have the horsepower to test her against either to determine how good she is,” he added.

So a comment on the lines of , ‘shows speed – can place’ may well have given exotic bettors a heads up to include her at their own risk – with two standout raced fancied runners in the field.

Bouvier was not heavily backed – the official run on shows 18-1 to 14-1.

Today’s Greyville Polytrack first-timer and rested horses sheet, which has again been kindly supplied by Phumelela Publishing, shows not a solitary constructive comment.

Are the Barrier Trials intended to replace the trainer comments in KZN? There has been no information to that effect.
