Ups And Downs

Pepper makes his point

This Sunday sees the running of the second leg of the 4 year old series, writes Gareth Pepper.

Stepitup

Stepitup – end of the road

Titanium was a facile victor, when almost forgotten, in the first leg and he should dominate.

His young trainer “Hollywood” Peters has already had a better start to his career than he could have imagined and he could continue his rich vein of form with his second Group 2 winner.

Hollywood had a fantastic debut winner on Friday night who goes by the name of Siam Sapphire and he is one that must be penciled into the black book. He was partnered by our own Barend Vorster and he looks to be loaded with ability.

In sad news , Champion sprinter Zac Sprinter and reigning horse of the year  Stepitup both suffered career ending injuries in recent weeks and two of our best are no longer going to grace the tracks of Kranji

I  wish them both well in their retirements and look forward to seeing who steps in to take up the positions at the top of those ranks! They provided us with such fantastic times over the last 18 months and it is sad that their careers have ended this way – but as we know, that’s racing.

On the positive side, Derreck David has been granted a licence until the end of the year. What fantastic news.

Derreck David

Derreck David big chace

Derreck made a big impression when riding here on a short stint recently and I am sure he will continue where he left off on his return to the turf club.

It will be good to have a long time friend on the island as that can make a huge difference when not at home and missing things back in the homeland.

I was sad to read about Molly and how things have transpired with him.

After being very vocal about how I was treated a few weeks back, I am sad this has happened to the veteran broadcaster who I remember watching as a young child back on Mabaleng featuring another legend in Martin Locke!

Interestingly enough,  Molly was the first presenter I worked with on course and although he gave me a tough time for a long time, I learnt a great deal from him and it would be sad to lose his knowledge.

Let’s hope it can be integrated or shared somehow.
