Carry On Khumalo

Keeping it in the family

Sean Tarry and his first choice rider S’manga Khumalo enjoyed a terrific Champions Day with a Gr1 double amongst their combined personal haul. Two Captain Al fillies played a prominent role in their success – and none less so than the 4yo Carry On Alice who firmly entrenched herself as Gauteng’s ‘Princess Of Speed’ with a runaway victory in the R1 million Gr1 Computaform Sprint.

It was on this very raceday in 2014 when Tarry took the tactical decision to run the then 2yo Carry On Alice against the boys in the Gr1 SA Nursery – and two years later history repeated itself with another Captain Al daughter in Cloth Of Cloud scoring a sensational win against the boys.

Carry On Alice is a speed machine and was recording the third Gr1 of her career as she charged clear of her hapless rivals to beat Coenie De Beer’s recent Senor Santa winner Talktothestars by a length in a time 55,74 secs.

The race was over when the likes of KZN visitor Barbosa and the gallant Trip Tease came looking and the seasoned sprinters had to be content with third and fourth cheques respectively.

Daring Dave had a  slow start and went backwards, eventually finishing tailed off.

After running second to the brilliant Alboran Sea last year, Carry On Alice went off a popular 9-10 choice to make amends in a decent field of some depth, that included the fourteen time winner Trip Tease and former Computaform Sprint winner Copper Parade.

Winning rider, Mauritzfontein S’manga Khumalo, who has been aboard at all her eight wins, said that he hidden behind Trip Tease up to the 600m but when asked his mount had given him everything and won effortlessly.

Trainer Sean Tarry confirmed that everything had gone to plan and that it was a ‘great win’.

Carry On Alice was bred by Klawervlei Stud and is by  champion sire Captain Al out of the four time winning Western Winter mare, Carry On Katie.  Her dam was a multiple Gr1 placed Gr2 winner as a 2yo.

The Tarry flyer has now won 8 races with 10 places from 22 starts and R3 141 250 in stakes.

She sold for R475 000 on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1 and races in the interests of Chris Van Niekerk, UK-based Dr J Warner and his wife, and her breeders.

What a great filly!
