Bonji For Bela

He has only ever won the Met on a filly or mare!

Imperious Sue – 1998 Gr1 J&B Met

Multiple past SA champion jockey Anthony Delpech has been engaged to ride Gr1 Paddock Stakes winner Bela-Bela in the R5 million Gr1 Sun Met on 28 January – just 13 days before he celebrates his 47th birthday.

Bonji, as he is affectionately known to his fans, knows the smashing daughter of Dynasty well and was aboard when she won the Gr1 Woolavington 2000 and the Gr2 Daisy Guineas last term.

The Seychelles-born Delpech has only ever won the Met on a member of the fairer sex.

He won the race in 1998 on the Northern Guest mare Imperious Sue and again in 2012 on Galileo’s superstar daughter, Igugu.

The Wilgerbosdrift-Mauritzfontein sponsored Delpech, who suffered a broken collarbone in early December, makes a welcome return to race action at Greyville this Friday evening.
