KZN challenger not disgraced

Safety Check wins last season

Safety Check wins last season

Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby produced last year’s Gr1 Al Fahidi Fort winner Safety Check in fine trim to beat Paul Lafferty’s Gr1 Premiers Champions Stakes winner Harry’s Son at Meydan on Thursday evening.

The 5yo Safety Check won three races at Meydan last season and registered the double with a minimum of fuss.

The Meydan turf track really suits Safety Check, and he relished  the fast ground to catch Harry’s Son flatfooted in the final 300m.

That said, Harry’s Son was not disgraced after a long lay-off and lightning raider regular pilot Piere Stydom gave him every chance.

Mike De Kock, who has won the race six times since 2003,filled the next 3 places.

The Avontuur bred Var gelding Mastermind finished best of the De Kock quartet for third, ahead of stablemate, Anaerobio.

Former Gr2 Gauteng Guineas winner  Tellina ran stone last in his first start in Dubai.
