Kannemeyer Strikes Again

Another Gr winner for Avontuur

Trainer Dean Kannemeyer maintained his outstanding strike rate from his Summerveld base and registered his third win in the past five runnings of the Gr3 Byerley Turk when the Fieldspring Racing-owned Mambo Mime ran on powerfully to clinch an exciting victory at Greyville on Friday evening.

Kannemeyer, who scored a Khaya Stables double at Greyville on Wednesday, celebrated a 100% feature strike saddling both big race winners on the evening.

And the Cape raiders dominated the race with Justin Snaith’s goodlooking Baritone beaten into second – the original favourite Victorious Jay (also a Capetonian) disappointed when finishing seventh, after showing such decent form in the Cape Summer.

But it was Dean Kannemeyer’s evening and the famous Fieldspring Racing silks, carried to so many feature wins for the Milnerton family operation in the glory days, were to the fore as Stuart Randolph brought the handsome colt through a gap at the 300m to challenge long-time leader, Budapest.

Under a left-handed ride, Mambo Mime hung out slightly and appeared to make contact with Budapest in the final stride – as a flying Baritone came home strongly down the outside.

Randolph’s timing was perfect though and Mambo Mime, far fitter than in his opening run three weeks ago, got the verdict deservedly, by a head in a time of 85,44 secs.

The winner looks best at a mile and more and this was a win full of merit – despite having jumped from the best of the draw and getting weight from the Snaith runner-up.

Baritone was always on the backfoot from his wide draw and ran a decent race in the circumstances.

Lanzerac Ready To Run winner Budapest stayed on well for third a half length back in a heartening form return, while Ernie grabbed fourth, after looming dangerously late.

The local stars Beat The Retreat, Executive Power and Spanish Captain were brought back down to earth with a bang – and had the wind knocked out of their SA Champions Season sails finishing out of the money – showing that the Cape form inevitably proves stronger.

Victorious Avontuur, breeders of last weekend’s Gr1 Horse Chestnut Stakes winner Legal Eagle, put the cherry on top of an outstanding week of winners.

The champion breeders produced Mambo Mime who was sold for R375 000 on the National Yearling Sale.

Avontuur offer Mambo Mime’s half-sister, named Mimicry, by Jay Peg, on the National Yearling Sale on Thursday 28 April. She is carded as lot 227 and with the Jay Peg fillies doing so well, she should attract plenty of spirited interest.

Mambo  Mime has now won three races with four places from nine starts and stakes of R294 675.

He also benefitted from the BSA Added Value Bonus of R87 500.

He looks a KZN Guineas candidate and is bound to improve further over the next few months.
