The Sansui Summer Cup day started on a rocky note for punters when the Luchelle Kruger trained Fanzene came up at any old price to win the R175 000 Gr3 Magnolia Handicap run over the 1160m. The mare ran the race of her life to beat a competitive field.

Mauritian based apprentice Akash Aucharuz is riding with plenty of confidence, but even his most ardent supporter would not have seen this train coming. At 110 to 1, Fanzene was completely unfancied and even with the benefit of hindsight, it is difficult to suggest she had a remote chance of even finding place money.

In a race loaded with pace, Alcanina and My Sanctuaru showed plenty of toe with Virgo’s Babe also in the firing line.

They were challenged by Arcetri Pink at the 300m marker with a dangerous looking move and Robbie Fradd appeared to be riding her comfortably.

The crowd went quiet late in the race though as the unconsidered Fanzene ghosted through the charge and went on well to win by a quarter length in a time of 68,66 secs.

The fast improving Sean Tarry  trained 4yo Dolomiti ran on well for second, just ahead of Geoff Woodruff’s Arcetri Pink, who showed pace and should not be long in winning again.

The disappointments of the race included the KZN visitors Garibondy and My Sanctuary. Both had their reputations dented and colours lowered by the local representatives.

Owned and bred by Mr P U Van Schoor, Fanzene, is by National Emblem out of the six time winning Rambo Dancer mare, Fashion Edition.

This was Fanzene’s first stakes win and first victory in well over a year.

She  has won 6 races with 9 places from 34 starts. She took her stake earnings to R445 725.

The form is naturally under the spotlight, but they were all beaten without any apparent excuses and there were some big expectations and serious performers amongst them!
