Protea Stakes – First Timer Can Feature

R5 million Pick 6 starts in Race 4 @ 14h40

Bold Eagle

Unbeaten Bold Eagle has been priced up at 16-10 to win his third successive start and the manner in which he captured the Listed Stormbird Stakes over 1000m last time, this Gavin van Zyl-trained runner deserves his position at the top of the boards.

Both his wins have come in yielding conditions so it could just be that he is a much better horse in the wet.

There is some degree of confidence coming from the stable. “Bold Eagle has won both his starts nicely and should be right there at the finish,” Gavin Van Zyl told Tabnews this week.

But the joker in the pack could be Mike de Kock’s Redoute’s Choice first-timer Zaahed. The A$550 000 purchase has been rumoured to be able to run a bit.

The Pick 6 pool is expected to get to R5 million – and Zaahed doesn’t pose a danger as a first timer in the popular exotic.

The first-timer comments:

MATTHEW DE KOCK FOR MIKE DE KOCK

Race 2 – ALNASL (5): Not showing much – hoping the race reveals more.

Race 4 – ZAAHED (9): Is showing nice work at home and if not too green can run into the money.

GARY ALEXANDER

Race 2 – MEMENTO (7): She will want more ground.
