Up The River Today

Small field - but competitive

The 3yo fillies take centre stage in the R250 000 Gr3 Three Troikas Stakes at Turffontein today where Canford Cliffs daughter Fish River gets an opportunity improve further on her course-and-distance winning effort last time out.

Mike de Kock

Mike de Kock – decent day on cards

The power combination of Mike de Kock and Anthony Delpech team up as the Australian-bred gets a serious opportunity to register her first stakes success.

The weights in this event are structured on a basis that two-time winners and less carry 53 kg, with a further penalty of 2kg for each additional win up to a maximum of 57kg. Over and above that, winners of Gr1 races get 3kg, Gr2 winners get 2kg and Gr3scorers just 1kg.

Fish River showed an instant liking for the increase in ground when beating Big Bang Theory in an MR 78 Handicap last time and well drawn here, she must be a big runner.

Her stablemate Takingthepeace is a three-time winner and showed an aptitude for this trip when running a decent third behind Big Bear in the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup. She won well just a matter of days ago and will strip fit.

Australian-bred San Fermin wiill prefer the 1400m

Mike Azzie’s Australian-bred San Fermin produced a terrific course and distance maiden win but when stepped up to the Gr3 Fillies Mile, failed to fire and ran 10 lengths off Folk Dance. She ran a much better race in the Swallow Stakes last time, when running on well under a length behind Covered In Snow. Grant van Niekerk is the form jockey engaged!

Ormond Ferraris and Piere Stydom team up with the Dynasty filly Dame Kelly who has run on well at her last two starts. While she is looking for more ground thatn this, she should be finishing well again and must go into the quartets.

Dame Kelly may be looking for further

Those look to be the chief contenders, with Fish River likely to face her major opposition San Fermin with high-riding Grant van Niekerk in the saddle.
