Double For Dean

Gr3 1-2 for Lammerskraal Stud

Dean Kannemeyer owned the night at Greyville on Friday with a terrific Gr3 double. His Trippi filly Fromafar improved on her best form to beat Flying Ice in the R250 000 Gr3 Umzimkhulu Stakes and at the same time made it a lovely 1-2 for breeders, Lammerskraal Stud.

On the other side of the coin, Cape trainer Justin Snaith sadly experienced a bit of a frustrating evening.

Fromafar wins Umzimkhulu

Baritone was beaten by Mambo Mime in the Byerley Turk a half hour earlier and then the stable’s big hope Bela-Bela had to be pulled out of this feature after taking a bump in transit.

“It’s a 50-50 but we’d rather not risk the public’s money and run her,” said a disappointed Snaith in the paddock prior to the race.

But as they say, one man’s meat is another man’s poison and the withdrawal of the Snaith star threw the race wide open – with an upset being delivered by Winning Form-sponsored lightweight Brian Nyawo who gets few feature ride opportunities.

And despite looking to have hashed things up on the Kannemeyer 20-1 shot by running wide on the bend, Nyawo made good by keeping his cool and the Trippi filly superbly balanced down the centre to beat 33-10 favourite Flying Ice by a comfortable length in a time of 86,60 secs.

Joburg visitor Joan Ranger gave some interesting collateral to the Gauteng form, finishing a quarter length further back in third.

Dean Kannemeyer – great feature double

Fromafar is owned by David Abery, whose blue and white silks are seen in the major racing centres and were worn to victory by Hot Ticket in the 2014 Gold Vase run at the same venue.

A National 2yo Sale graduate, Fromafar was bought by Form Bloodstock for R300 000.

She is a Lammerskraal Stud-bred daughter of Trippi (what a run he is having!) out of the US-bred Yes It’s True mare, Big Mona.

Lammerskraal also bred the runner-up and race favourite Flying Ice, a stakes winner as a 2yo, who looks overdue to win again soon.

Fromafar has won twice and run 6 places from ten starts with stakes earned of R260 425.

She was also the recipient of the R77 500 Added Value Stakes Bonus courtesy of Bloodstock SA.

Fromafar should go 2000m and could give her connections plenty of fun in the SA Champions Season.
